News / Junior BoysJUNIOR PRIZEGIVING 2011 Paul Lawrie with some of the prizewinners. Junior convener Neil Irvine is on the right. Prior to the prizegiving junior convener Neil Irvine gave a brief resume of some of the junior highlights of the year. There was some excellent golf played by the boys throughout the season. We had 5 pennant matches winning 4 and drawing the other one allowing us to top our league. We played Inverallochy in the semi and had a comfortable 5 – 1 success. In the final at Peterculter we were up against a strong Deeside team yet were very unlucky to go down by a score of 3.5 – 2.5. This qualified us to play in the Home Nations Team Championship at Cardrona GC where we finisheda creditable 9th. This year we have been drawn against Murcar, Aboyne and Auchmill at home and Old Meldrum and Inverurie away in the pennant league. In the Off the Tee competition we beat both Peterculter and Aboyne at Peterculter in the regional finals to reach the area finals. We overcame Northern GC in the morning semi final but ran out of steam against McDonald Ellon in the afternoon’s final by 4 holes. Ross Anderson successfully defended the junior championship for a third year in a row. This was after a three way 18 hole playoff against Kevin Riddell and Scott Murray. Kevin got into the playoff thanks to an excellent 3under par 63 in the final round which included a hole in one at the 14th hole. On the back of Ross’s success, he reached the final of the Spence Trophy (a competition for a junior champions in the North East). He was very unlucky to lose out at the 19th hole against the Peterculter champion playing on his home course. Other notable successes were Grant Robb winning the Stonehaven Men’s Open, Ross Anderson winning the 36 hole handicap Banchory Open and the Duff House Royal Open, Kevin Riddell winning thePeterculter handicap open and Cameron Davidson winning the Captain’s Prize at Stonehaven against all the men, ladies and juniors. Ross Anderson continued to represent the North East district with some distinction and also finished runner up in theNorth East Boy’s Order of Merit. Ross has now become assistant professional at Finchley Golf Club – we wish him every success. We also wish Scott Murray well in his 3 year scholarship at Cleveland ,Tennessee . We also wish Ross McAllan and Kevin Riddell every success as they leave the junior section. We held our first Paul Lawrie U10 & U12 Flag event – despite the very strong winds there was a good turnout of 28 boys and girls from around the north east– hopefully this will become a yearly event. Another first was a visit by Paul who offered to play a game with some of our lower handicap boys – a very successful day and great experience for the boys. Neil also gave thanks to the following for their help and support throughout last season:-
To Freeland Freight Services for their continued sponsorship of the junior open To a financial contribution fromthe Royal Bank of Scotland through Rose Riddell To ARAMARK Ltd through Neill Murray for providing t-shirts for the pennant team. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP 2011 After 4 rounds of the junior championship there was a 3 way tie between defending champion Ross Anderson, Scott Murray and Kevin Riddell. The playoff turned into a hard tussle. After 7 holes the boys were still tied. Ross went ahead with a 3 at the 8th hole but was overtaaken by Scott when he birdied the 9th and 10th holes. Kevin's chance went when he went out of bounds at the 12th hole and signed for an ugly 7. Ross's 4 at the 12th meant he was back on level terms with Scott Again. There was no change at the gulley holes. Ross then struck a decisive blow at the 16th when he sent a 7 iron onto the green and holed the putt for an eagle. Scott could only birdie the hole. This allowed Ross to par the final 2 holes for a 1 stroke victory. This triumph will go along with his wins in 2009 and 2010. Scores - 67 - Ross Anderson, 68 - Scott Murray, 73 - Kevin Riddell.
